Teenage pimples, blackheads and puberty

You are not alone!

Approximately 17 million people suffer from pimples and blemish prone skin and up to 90% of the 17 million are in their teens or 20’s. So, next time you are at the movies or out shopping take a look around because most of your friends will probably have a couple of pimples as well.

Also, chances are your favorite TV, movie star or singer suffers from blemishes- you just can’t see it because of the professional makeup they use. They may look perfect but chances are they have struggled with pimples too!

It’s not your fault! Your pimples are not caused by chocolate, greasy food or poor hygiene. It is simply all part of growing up! When you reach puberty your body starts producing hormones called androgens. Excess oil and dead skin cells clog your pores leading to blackheads and whiteheads. So don’t feel like you have been singled out, don’t lock yourself away in your bedroom feeling miserable, instead take positive steps to help solve the problem!

Are pimples getting you down?
Take the ‘Stress Test’

  1. Have you ever done any of the following because your pimples were making you feel embarrassed, anxious or self-conscious:
  2. Hesitated to go out on a date with a guy or girl you really like?
  3. Passed on going to a movie or concert with a group of your friends?
  4. Spent more time at home alone and less time going out?
  5. Avoided being with your friends?
  6. Gotten into more arguments than usual with your family members?
  7. Neglected or been unable to focus on your school work?
  8. Stayed home from school more often than usual?
  9. Called in sick at work more often than usual?
  10. Been unable to focus on your job?

Keeping pimples at bay

  1. Wash your skin twice a day, especially after exercise. Always wash before you go to bed. Exfoliate using a formula with small smooth grains rather than almond or apricot shell fragments that can damage your skin making pimples worse.
  2. Wash your hair every day. Greasy hair rubbing on your skin or transferring grease by playing with your hair and then touching your face will make acne worse.
  3. Try not to squeeze or pick your spots as you will only spread bacteria and possibly cause unnecessary scarring.
  4. Don’t overwash. You do not have pimples because you are dirty! Washing more than twice a day may irritate your skin and trigger your glands to produce more oil, leading to more pimples!
  5. Be realistic about treating pimples, don’t expect results overnight, you will only end up even more disheartened.
  6. Allow 8 weeks before you notice a significant improvement. Accessorize wisely. Heat and friction (rubbing) can cause flare-ups. So steer clear of hats and head bands - and if your sports team requires you to wear a helmet or any other equipment that might rub against your skin, try lining it with a layer of clean, soft cotton. And remember to shower immediately after exercising - don’t sit around in a sweaty uniform, no matter how cool you look.
  7. Moisturise. Even though your skin feels oily and greasy it is still very important to moisturize. We recommend our own dr. dermacare hydrating lotion. Our lotion will not cause break outs.

Cover up!

Handy make up tip! If you are applying foundation and concealer we recommend the following method to get the best coverage: apply concealer onto your blemishes, apply your foundation then, over the top of your foundation apply another coat of concealer…it works wonders! Also, use good quality brushes to get that flawless finish.
